Can You Get a Federal Apostille Back in Less Than 7 Business Days?
Usually, no. Seven business days is the U.S. Department of State’s own processing time for walk-in requests, and no courier or apostille service, including us, can buy a faster lane. The one exception is a same-day appointment the State Department reserves for life-or-death family emergencies. Here is how the timeline works, who qualifies for that exception and how to keep everything else from adding days.

The Short Answer
In almost every case, no. A federal apostille comes only from the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Authentications, and its fastest routine option, dropping a document off at its Washington, D.C., counter, is processed within 7 business days. There is no expedite fee to pay and no priority lane for couriers.
The single exception is an emergency appointment. If you must travel abroad within two weeks because an immediate family member has a life-or-death emergency, the State Department may give you an appointment and process your request the same day. Everyone else is on the 7-business-day walk-in track or the 5-week mail track.
The State Department’s three options in one line: mail (within 5 weeks), walk-in drop-off (within 7 business days) and emergency appointment (same day, for life-or-death family emergencies only).
Where the 7 Business Days Come From
The State Department matches its processing options to how soon you travel. These are its published options as of October 2026:
| Option | Meant for | Processing time | How it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trips 5 weeks or more away | Within 5 weeks from the day the State Department receives it | Form DS-4194, your documents, $20 per document by check or money order, and a prepaid return envelope, sent by tracked USPS to its PO box in Sterling, Virginia. Packages take several more days to reach the Washington office. | |
| Walk-in drop-off | Trips 2 to 3 weeks away | Within 7 business days | Drop off and pick up from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m., Monday through Thursday. No appointment is needed, and a representative or company can drop off and pick up for you. |
| Emergency appointment | Travel within 2 weeks because an immediate family member has a life-or-death emergency | The same day as the appointment | By request, with proof. Appointments run from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. |
Apostille services like ours use the walk-in drop-off, which is why 7 business days is the standard turnaround for a hand-delivered federal apostille. The Office of Authentications is open from 7:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., Monday through Friday, and it processes requests on Fridays, but it doesn’t take drop-offs, pick-ups or appointments on Fridays. That’s why our 7-business-day count skips Fridays, as well as federal holidays, when the office is closed.
The Only Faster Route: Emergency Appointments
The State Department may schedule a same-day appointment if you must travel abroad within two weeks because an immediate family member has a life-or-death emergency. To ask for one, email the Office of Authentications at the address on its Request Authentication Services page and include:
- Proof of international travel within two weeks, such as an airline ticket or itinerary.
- Proof of the life-or-death emergency, such as a death certificate, a statement from a mortuary or a letter from a hospital signed by a doctor.
- A professional translation of any proof that isn’t in English, with the translated copy notarized.
If the State Department approves the request, your document is processed the same day as your appointment. Bring Form DS-4194, the documents and the $20 fee per document, which in person is paid by credit or debit card or a contactless method.
Visa appointments and job start dates don’t qualify. The State Department limits emergency appointments to life-or-death situations involving an immediate family member. Business, visa and closing deadlines, however urgent, go through the regular walk-in drop-off.
Why No Service Can Promise Faster
Every apostille service filing federal documents uses the same State Department counter and the same timeline. The State Department doesn’t sell expedited authentication: its fee is $20 per document on every route, and its published options are mail, walk-in drop-off and emergency appointments.
Walk-in requests are processed within 7 business days, so a document is occasionally ready sooner, but there is no way to request or pay for that, and no one can promise it. If a service offers a routine federal apostille in one, two or three days, ask how. None of the State Department’s published options offers that, and an apostille from any other office, such as a state Secretary of State, isn’t valid on a federal document. See why federal documents are never state-apostilled.
What a good service can do is make sure you don’t lose days: filing correctly the first time, delivering by hand instead of by mail, and getting your document back to you quickly.
What the 7 Business Days Don’t Include
The 7 business days cover the State Department’s processing. Your total timeline also includes:
- Getting the document itself. An FBI background check, for example, comes back within 48 hours of fingerprinting at a participating Post Office, while a paper request by mail takes up to 15 days plus mail time. See how to get an FBI background check.
- Getting it to us. Electronic originals, such as the FBI’s PDF results, can be uploaded the same day. Paper originals have to travel to Washington.
- Embassy legalization, for countries outside the Hague Apostille Convention. The State Department issues an authentication certificate, and the destination’s embassy adds its own processing time; the UAE Embassy in Washington, for example, says it needs a minimum of 3 business days to process a document. See embassy legalization.
- Translation, if the destination requires one. See certified and sworn translation.
- Return shipping to you, in the U.S. or abroad.
- Corrections. If a document is refused, the clock starts again once the problem is fixed.
How to Avoid Adding Days
You can’t shorten the State Department’s 7 business days, but you can make sure nothing else stretches the total.
- Confirm the destination country before you order. Form DS-4194 names the country where you’ll use the document, and that decides whether you receive an apostille or an authentication certificate. Getting it wrong means filing twice. See apostille vs. authentication.
- Send the original, unaltered. The State Department needs an original or certified copy with a legible official signature, the official’s printed name and title, the agency’s seal and the date of issue. Don’t notarize, staple, laminate or write on it; the State Department says a notarized federal document is no longer valid for authentication.
- For FBI background checks, check the watermark and signature first. A print that drops the CJIS watermark is refused. See why the FBI watermark matters.
- Order every copy you need at once. Each country needs its own authenticated document. See one FBI background check, several countries.
- Plan around federal holidays. Each one that falls Monday through Thursday pushes the finish line back a day.
- Don’t route a federal document through a state office. A Secretary of State will send it back, which can cost weeks. See what to do if it already happened.
- Choose fast return shipping, especially if you’re abroad.

If Your Deadline Is Sooner Than 7 Business Days
- Check whether you qualify for an emergency appointment. If an immediate family member has a life-or-death emergency and you travel within two weeks, request one right away.
- Ask the receiving office about timing. Some consulates and employers will let you submit the apostilled document after your appointment or after you arrive. Ask before you assume.
- Have the apostilled document sent to you abroad. We ship internationally with tracking, so you can travel and receive it there.
- Reschedule if the receiving office allows it. Moving an appointment by a week is often easier than any workaround.
- Start today. The 7 business days begin once your document is in hand and ready to file, so every day spent shipping or fixing a document is a day lost.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pay extra to get a federal apostille faster?
No. The State Department charges $20 per document on every route and doesn’t offer a paid expedite. Its fastest routine option, the walk-in drop-off, is processed within 7 business days.
Does Federal Apostille offer same-day federal apostilles?
No. Same-day processing exists only through the State Department’s emergency appointments, which are limited to travel within two weeks because an immediate family member has a life-or-death emergency. Our standard turnaround is 7 business days, excluding Fridays and federal holidays.
Why don’t Fridays count toward the 7 business days?
The State Department processes requests on Fridays, but its counter doesn’t accept drop-offs, pick-ups or appointments that day. Walk-in service runs Monday through Thursday, from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m.
Who qualifies for a State Department emergency appointment?
Someone who must travel abroad within two weeks because an immediate family member has a life-or-death emergency. You need proof of travel, such as a ticket or itinerary, and proof of the emergency, such as a death certificate, a mortuary statement or a hospital letter signed by a doctor.
Is mailing my document to the State Department faster?
No. Mailed requests are processed within 5 weeks of the day they are received, and packages take several more days to move from the Sterling, Virginia, PO box to the Washington office.
Can a state Secretary of State apostille a federal document faster?
No. Only the U.S. Department of State can apostille federal documents such as FBI background checks. A state office will return a federal document, which costs time.
Does the 7 business days include embassy legalization?
No. For countries outside the Hague Apostille Convention, the State Department issues an authentication certificate, and the destination country’s embassy then adds its own processing time.
How do I check on a document I mailed to the State Department myself?
Use the Office of Authentications’ Contact Us form. The State Department says it responds by email or phone within 7 business days and asks that you not submit another request while you wait.
The Bottom Line
A routine federal apostille takes 7 business days because that is how long the State Department takes to process walk-in requests, and no service can change it. The only same-day route is an emergency appointment for a life-or-death family emergency. Everything else, from getting the document right the first time to shipping it back fast, is where you can still save time.
Need a Federal Apostille on a Deadline?
